DENTAL BRIDGES

Dental bridges are prosthetic devices used to replace missing teeth and restore oral function and aesthetics. Comprising one or more artificial teeth, bridges are anchored in place by dental crowns affixed to adjacent natural teeth or dental implants.

Traditional bridges involve crowning the adjacent teeth, serving as anchors for the artificial teeth or teeth suspended between them. Cantilever bridges are an alternative, relying on a single adjacent tooth for support. Implant-supported bridges utilize dental implants as sturdy foundations, eliminating the need for natural tooth alteration. Bridges enhance chewing ability, and speech, and prevent adjacent teeth from shifting. Regular oral hygiene, including flossing beneath the artificial tooth, is crucial for maintaining bridge longevity and overall oral health.

Beyond tooth replacement, bridges enhance appearance, align teeth, and correct bite issues (dental occlusion). Gaps from missing teeth can shift the remaining ones, impacting bite mechanics and causing dental problems. Bridges and crowns prevent these issues. Crafted from metal alloys, gold, or porcelain, bridges use false teeth (pontics). Support can be via natural teeth or dental implants, offering various benefits:

  • Renewed smile
  • Improved chewing and speech
  • Face shape maintenance
  • Proper bite force distribution
  • Prevention of tooth drift

Dental bridges offer a popular solution. But with various bridge types available, it can be confusing to know which one suits you best. Here’s a breakdown of the three main options:

  • Traditional Bridges: These are the most common type. They involve placing crowns on healthy teeth on either side of the gap, with artificial teeth (pontics) in between. Crafted from durable materials like porcelain fused to metal or ceramic, they offer a natural look and strong functionality.
  • Cantilever Bridges (Less Common): While not as frequently used today, cantilever bridges were once an option for patients with only one healthy tooth next to the missing tooth. However, due to uneven pressure distribution, they can put excessive stress on the supporting tooth and are not recommended for the back of the mouth.
  • Maryland Bonded Bridges: These bridges offer a more conservative approach. Instead of crowns, they use a metal or porcelain framework bonded to the backs of the healthy teeth on either side of the gap. The framework supports artificial teeth made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or plastic. This option requires minimal alteration to the healthy teeth.
