Frequently Asked Invisalign Questions

Many people turn to Invisalign to help them with their teeth problems – from crooked teeth to gapped teeth to misaligned teeth – the Invisalign system is one of the best. Why is that? What makes this orthodontic system different from traditional braces? There is a multitude of reasons, but mainly because they don’t put pressure on the teeth. Braces use metal wires and brackets. Invisalign uses nearly invisible opaque, plastic aligner trays, which shift the teeth into the correct position.

Each aligner is changed out every couple of weeks and should be worn up to 22 hours a day. There are only three times you should take them out:

  • Brushing your teeth
  • Flossing your teeth
  • Eating

Some people will take them out when attending a social event. It takes a minimum of 20 hours for the Invisalign to work and straighten teeth.

If you suffer from any of the following problems, Invisalign may be right for you.

  • Crooked teeth
  • Crossbite
  • Gaps in teeth
  • Open bite
  • Overbite
  • Overlapping teeth
  • Underbite

If you have a severe teeth-related problem, it’s best to use traditional braces over others. Have your dentist conduct an in-depth exam on your teeth and smile to find out if the Invisalign treatment can be used.

More teens and adults are choosing Invisalign because of the multitude of benefits they have to offer. These benefits include:

  • Comfort – Cheeks, gums and lips are easily irritated by traditional wires and brackets. Invisalign retainers are smooth and far more comfortable and won’t cause irritation to the mouth.
  • Less Treatment Time – It can take up to 12 months for Invisalign to work, but how long exactly depends on the patient. Traditional braces must be worn for up to two years (or 24 months).
  • Looks – Invisalign is made of practically invisible SmartTrack material, which can improve your self-esteem. When using Invisalign, you’ll look and feel better during the treatment and afterward.
  • Expectedness – Invisalign works in stages, and you can look over the treatment results as you go along. Being able to see the treatment plan gives you confidence that you’re making the right decision.
  • Improved Health – It’s easier to clean straight teeth than problematic teeth. It’s prudent to get your teeth cleaned to maintain good dental health. Make sure to enact a good oral hygiene routine to ensure your teeth stay healthy after the treatment is over.
  • No Food Limitations – With traditional braces, you cannot eat crunchy or sticky foods/snacks, as the brackets and wires can break. Invisalign is not like that. You can take them out and eat any kind of food you want, including popcorn, chips, cookies, etc.

Invisalign can also be used with other cosmetic dentistry options like cosmetic bonding, tooth-colored fillings, teeth whitening, etc. This can help transform your teeth even more.

The first thing you must do is set up a visit with Dr. Kathy Zahedi, who will determine your teeth’s position and how they relate to the jaw. She’ll provide you with an idea of how your teeth will move during the process. With the iTero digital scanner, a 3-D image is taken of your smile.  This image will help lay out the treatment plan. The scans are sent to the Invisalign lab, where your custom aligners will be made.

Up to 30 aligners are used in the treatment, with wearers graduating from one aligner to the next in a matter of weeks. A follow-up visit will need to be set up at the office to determine what progress is made and if adjustments are necessary.

When you want to improve your smile and are considering Invisalign, reach out to Dr. Zahedi to set a consultation appointment up. You can reach her by calling 310-294-8735. Patients in and around the Santa Monica area are welcomed. If you’re ready for a new smile, she is ready to help.
